Planning, managing and performing the processing of materials into intermediate or final products, including related professional and technical support activities such as production planning and control, maintenance and manufacturing/process engineering.
Careers in this cluster fall into the production; installation, maintenance, and repair; and architecture and engineering occupational groups used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for occupational projections.
Employment of production occupations is projected to decline 5 percent, with a loss of about 429,500 jobs from 2018 to 2028. Technological advancements are expected to continue to replace many of the manufacturing workers that make up a large share of the production occupations. Fewer workers are expected to be needed in the manufacturing sector as many processes have become computer-controlled.
Installation, Maintenance, and Repair
Employment of installation, maintenance, and repair occupations is projected to grow 4 percent from 2018 to 2028, about as fast as the average for all occupations, which will result in about 233,200 new jobs.
Architecture and Engineering
Employment of architecture and engineering occupations is projected to grow 4 percent from 2018 to 2028, about as fast as the average for all occupations. About 113,300 new jobs are projected to be added. Most of the projected job growth in this group is in the engineer occupations, as their services will be in demand in various areas such as rebuilding of infrastructure, renewable energy, oil and gas extraction, and robotics.
